US Army opens $4.15bn counter-drone contract pool under Domestic Shield
Ten new awards give the Army and other authorised buyers routes to acquire sensors, command systems and defeat technologies. The headline figures are contract ceilings, not confirmed spending or deliveries.

Ten awards, several layers of numbers
The US Army announced ten indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contracts on 29 September for counter-uncrewed aircraft systems under Joint Interagency Task Force 401's Domestic Shield programme. The official list names Allen Control Systems, Digital Force Technologies, DroneShield, Echodyne, Napatree Technology, PVP Advanced EO Systems, RADA Technologies, SmartShooter, SRC and L3Harris WESCAM.
Adding the published ceilings gives $4.15 billion: seven awards at $500 million, two at $250 million and one at $150 million. Defense One reported that only about $50 million was obligated when the awards were made. It also reported that earlier and planned awards take the wider contract structure above $5 billion, with room to reach a $7 billion ceiling.
An IDIQ vehicle creates a route for future orders when exact quantities or delivery schedules are not fixed at the outset. DWN analysis: the maximum values show potential purchasing capacity, not a promise that every dollar will be spent with every supplier. Actual expenditure depends on later task orders and funding.
That distinction changes how the headline should be read. The Army has not announced $7 billion of delivered equipment. The ten named awards establish competing contract channels, while the much smaller amount initially obligated is the clearest public measure of money committed at award.
The Army says the awards span the sequence from detecting drones to defeating them, including optical aids, robotic weapon stations, compact radar and long-range tracking cameras. Officials told reporters that the broader procurement effort also covers sensors, command-and-control systems and effectors, rather than selecting one standard product for every location.
The contracts support Domestic Shield, which is intended to protect prioritised US defence facilities and assets, as well as JIATF-401's counter-UAS marketplace and other federal requirements. The marketplace is presented as a way for authorised military, government and allied buyers to compare and procure approved capabilities.
The public Army announcement does not match named products or quantities to each company. Breaking Defense reported that officials did not provide delivery dates or identify recipients, while the Army release does not publish comparative test results for the systems available under the contracts.
The next evidence to watch is therefore task-order value, equipment quantity, delivery and acceptance. Those milestones will show how much of the available ceiling becomes real procurement. The awards are significant because they widen the buying framework; they do not by themselves establish operational performance or a completed national counter-drone shield.
DWN interpretation is identified in the text. This is not original field reporting or independent technical validation. Historical background retains its original dates; a later expansion date does not turn an old announcement into new news.
The U740 completed its first European flight on 29 September. Airbus says the test clears a path toward 2029, but the MARS mission software and Eurofighter teaming remain for later trials.
